  • (Dublin) EU biofuels policy still driving the second scramble for Africa

    At a seminar on biofuels in Dublin yesterday, David Barissa, a leading expert on food security and land rights from ActionAid Kenya spoke of the litany of broken promises, rights violations and destruction which have faced poor communities in Kenya as part of the second scramble for Africa.

  • (Lusaka, 13 February 2013) ActionAid has said today that its recent report Sweet Nothings which focuses on Zambia Sugar’s tax avoidance techniques in Zambia is not a call for Zambia Sugar to close its factory in Mazabuka or reduce its workers.  ActionAid is calling on the Zambian government and the international community to review the tax codes and tax treaties that allow multinational companies to avoid paying their fair share of taxes in Zambia.

  • 18 October 2012, Rome: In a new report launched today, ActionAid and IFSN called on governments, international agencies, UN bodies to tackle rising global food prices. The report looks at what is causing food prices to rise sharply in developing countries, using evidence from Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

  • News that the EU is proposing a 5% limit on the use of food-based biofuels has been welcomed by ActionAid as an important symbolic first step.  But the anti-poverty agency warns that without a total ban on food and land based fuels, millions will still go hungry because food prices will continue to be affected and land will still be grabbed.
