Giriki's story
For decades innocent families living in Giriki, Eastern Uganda, have suffered unspeakable brutality. Firstly it was cattle rustlers who robbed them of their livestock and livelihoods. Then, as organised society began to break down, the Lord’s Resistance Army waged all-out war across the area – destroying homes, schools and health centres - everything that lay in their path. 30,000 people were forced to flee their homes. In 2006 the Ugandan Government oversaw a peace agreement and since 2007 displaced families have started to return to the area to slowly re-build their lives, literally from the ground up.
Building a new future
‘’My biggest hope for my pupils and the children in our community now is that our friends in Ireland can help them get the education they need’’Alfred Kityo, local primary school teacher, Giriki, Uganda
With so much work to do to rebuild their lives, mothers like Irene (pictured) have no way to get their children to the nearest government school. So they have a ‘Grand Design’, a design that will guarantee the children of Giriki's future.
Alfred Kityo, the local school teacher has been running simultaneous classes under an open sided structure the community built 2 years ago out of wood and corrugated iron. The solution is education. Literally, the children are the future.
