Women around the world are more likely to live in poverty – just because they are women.
Our work at grassroots and international level is helping women to challenge discrimination, assert their rights, and transform their societies.
We believe that every child has a right to a good quality education leading to a bright future, which is why we support education and particularly, a girl's right to education. Here's an example of the different ways we support women’s rights and education - thanks to your ongoing generous support.
The gift of education for girls in Kenya means a brighter future
Thank you people of ActionAid Ireland – I am privileged to have gone to school unlike many of my friends who were not given the opportunity as girls to go to school.
Leornida Murio, Kongelai, Kenya
Leornida Murio aged 17 is in class 8 in Kongelai Primary School. Thanks to Child Sponsors like you, ActionAid Ireland has constructed three new classrooms accommodating 180 children, 76 students are girls. Before, Leonida really enjoyed going to school..
Apart from sitting on stones while lessons were being taught, five pupils would share one desk.
This all changed in 2011 when ActionAid Ireland supporter, Aodan Clarke, and his family gave Leornida’s school a gift of 80 desks. Leornida enjoys learning much more now as a result, and is determined to complete her studies and encourage her friends to go to school too.
Hundreds of thousands of Kenyan girls do not go to school every day - just because they are girls. ActionAid Ireland supporters sponsor over 2,600 children in the regions of Marafa and Kongelai.
Please continue to support us, so we can campaign local authorities to pass bye-laws requiring all girls of school-going age have the opportunity go to school.
